Fraxinus excelsior is a tall, deciduous tree that is native to most of Europe. The tree stops growing after 100 years and usually grows as tall as 98 feet. Black buds from the previous year’s shoots expand into small dense, purplish clusters in early spring. Its dark green leaves, among the last to open in spring and the first to fall in autumn, are delicate, multi-divided, and 10 to 12 inches long. The tree’s springtime flowers develop into clusters of 1.5-inch long winged fruits. These fruits turn brown and remain on the tree, making an attractive winter landscape element.

Phytosociology : It is known that Ash timber is so elastic that a joist of it will bear more before it breaks than one of any other tree. Ash grows rapidly and evaporates a lot of water. The tree rebounds more than any other tree when it falls. Its fiber creates the most elastic, supple wood. It is used in making baseball bats, hockey sticks, and skis.
