The Sorbus domestica is a deciduous tree that is native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia. It is a rare species and is sporadically found in Serbia.

The tree grows at a moderate rate, reaching a height of 50 feet. Its smooth, thin-barked trunk is short and slender with spreading branches that form a narrow, open, rounded crown. The distinguishing feature of the Sorbus domestica is its leaves—compound and double-toothed, consisting of 13 to 21 leaflets that are 1.5 to 3 inches long. Showy clusters of round, five-petalled flowers appear in June and July, followed by apple-shaped or pear-shaped fruits in August and September. The fruits, known as sorb apples, are highly astringent when first picked, but sweeten as they ripen. The fruits can be eaten raw, cooked, or dried. The fine-grained, heavy wood is used to make furniture, screws, and wine presses. The bark is a source of tannin.

In two clinical series (case reports of a number of patients who are treated consecutively in a clinic), patients with advanced cancer who had not responded to standard therapy were treated with benzaldehyde. Some patients had a complete response (the disappearance of all signs and symptoms of cancer), while some had a decrease in tumor size. The responses to benzaldehyde lasted as long as the treatment continued. Benzaldehyde is released in greatest quantity in the presence of cancer cells. Benzaldehyde is also toxic to cancer cells.
